Director's Commentary

Ecosystem services are resources and processes, such as the water cycle, oxygen production, and pollination, that are provided by functioning ecosystems and are vital to everyday human life. Although we all are aware that we receive valuable services from the environment, we often take them for granted and forget about the priceless ways in which our planet helps us survive (85). For example, bees and other animals pollinate plants, which produce oxygen and food for humans. If pollination were to cease, humans would lose these vital resources and the whole population would be facing serious problems.
Humans need to learn to be more appreciative of the ecosystem services that our planet provides us and realize that our actions directly affect the health of the ecosystems surrounding us: “ignorance of nature’s services and the environmental costs of pollution present major obstacles to developing ecological economics…” (87). We need to decrease our negative impacts on the Earth, such as erosion and pollution, so that ecological systems can function as efficiently as possible; healthy ecosystems result in increased ecosystem services.
Initially, we were unsure on how to make this video. We didn’t know how to properly explain ecosystem services to the average student when some of us weren’t even sure as to what it meant. It was then that we decided to interview people and ask them what they thought ecosystem services were. We wanted to know what the perception of ecosystem services were so that we could first show the ignorance of the average person and secondly better understand how to explain what they really are. If we were going to show how little people understood the concept, we had to then properly explain it with more than just a definition. Jake then thought of asking a professor for an “expert” opinion on the subject. Jake then contacted Dr. Eric Wiseman, a professor in Urban Forestry here at Virginia Tech, and he agreed to the interview. With these two parts of our video determined, we needed to put our definition in and get the video flowing. We also wanted to mention Biosphere 2 since Dr. Hull referenced it multiple times in class. For the interviews, we simply asked our peers what they believed ecosystem services were. We got some interesting responses, as was expected. After the interviews, our definition of ecosystem services was given. We wanted people to start thinking about what they thought ecosystem services were and then have it defined for them. By doing this we hope to get people to realize that they too do not understand it well. Dr. Wiseman then gave his opinion on the definition. Surprisingly, his was similar to ours without him being told what ours was. This gave us more confidence in our definition considering we researched what it was and then formed our own.
Dr. Wiseman then spoke on his professional experience with ecosystem services in the urban forest. This provides insight into a real world application of the true value of ecosystem services. We then asked Dr. Wiseman to discuss how he goes about estimating the value of ecosystem services. He was able to give some examples on how this is accomplished but was still able to convey the difficulty in making such an estimate. We then discussed the possibility of losing some of the services that we take for granted. This is where we implanted referencing Biosphere 2 as it was a failed attempt to recreate the biosphere we live in now. This demonstrates how little we know about the ecosystems we occupy and how difficult and expensive it would be to recreate them. This is the main point of our video. We want to stress that it is important we realize what we receive for little to nothing and that the services need to be conserved and protected. Lastly, Dr. Wiseman summed up his interview with his thoughts on the importance of understanding these services so that we can attempt to engineer new solutions. We hope this video will get students thinking about ecosystem services and their real importance to us.
There are five main points that our video and Infinite Nature focus on. The first point is that the average person does not know what ecosystem services are. This is especially focused on in the video interviews because it shows that people are not aware of just how much the environment provides for us. If people are not aware of these services, then they cannot do anything to prolong them for use in the future. The book briefly discusses how ignorance of nature’s services will negatively affect us in the long run(87). We use so many ecological services every day, but cannot define them.
The second focus is defining ecosystem services. Ecosystem services are resources and processes, such as the water cycle, oxygen production, and pollination, that are provided by functioning ecosystems and are vital to everyday human life. Infinite Nature explains them by stating that “nature” is like humanity’s landlord, and everything that nature provides can be compared to “rent and utilities (85).” People use all of the environment’s free services without paying a cost. Defining ecosystem services is a focus because the definition in itself explains just how important they are to life.
The importance of ecosystem services is the third focus. New York City and its drinking water as an example to explain the importance of ecosystem services. It details exactly what New York does to ensure that they are able to drink clean water. Our video focuses on importance by interviewing Dr. Wiseman for his opinion on the subject. The video also asks what would happen if one or more ecosystem services were no longer available to us. Even without one service, the impact is tremendous. The focus is that without ecosystem services, we would not be able to survive. We are dependent on them.
Our dependence on ecosystem services introduces the fourth focus.Infinite Nature and our video both discuss whether it would be realistic or even possible for humans to recreate or repair these services if something was to happen to them. Biosphere 2, a failed attempt to recreate a second functioning biosphere (or environment), shows that our technology cannot replace what the environment provides for us (86). We might be able to use technology as a good attempt to repair a service, but we are not capable of replacing all of them. The book states, “The more we learn about nature’s services, the more we realize we lack the means to replicate them" (85).
The final focus of our video and the book describes our responsibility as “tenants” of planet Earth to keep ecosystems functioning at the most efficient level possible. Our video places an emphasis on this topic by interviewing Dr. Wiseman on what people can do to help prolong what our environment naturally provides for free. The book on the other hand, discusses options such as “government pollution prevention programs” that would help to protect services (86). Both our video and the book support the fact that educating people about ecological services is the best way to ensure that they are not damaged or destroyed.

  1. I thought that your all's video was well done. There were some differences in volume levels that made it hard to hear the people being interviewed. The content from Dr. Wiseman seemed to fit in excellently with what we learned in class.

  2. I thought your video was good; there were some major variations in volume that made watching it rather difficult. I thought that you guys might have relied too much on Dr. Wiseman for the content of your video and could have changed it up a bit with some more narration or different kinds of video clips. Although, I thought that the information he provided was very good and helpful.

  3. I think the team did a nice job covering all the necessary angles of ecosystem services. I thought it was a nice tactic to see first some misconceptions before explaining the real definition. I would have like to have seen something more to break up the interviews such as pictures or images. Also more emphasis could have been placed on the difficulty assigning monetary value to these services. Overall nice job guys! I know this wasn’t easy!

  4. I really enjoyed the video. I like how you got a professional's opinion in there who gave options for different ways to help the environment perform it's services. Maybe more information could have been said about how valuable these resources are by giving some statistics about how much is being used and how much is being replaced. What can we do to help like lessening CO2 emissions, planting more trees, and not degrading our environment. I know most of us as natural resource majors understand these things because that is why we're here but the other folks may need it spelled out a little more. Good job- I know it had to have been pretty time consuming and this is my favorite video so far (besides the one my group did).

  5. I think this video was well thought out and organized. Starting with the interviews was a good way of highlighting that the average person is not aware of what ecosystem services are, much less their value. The professor of urban forestry was a great way to provide credible information on the subject. My only issue is that because of his background, he really only concentrated on the services trees provide. There was less emphasis and information about other services, such as bees for pollination. Overall, a really good piece that was informative and could definitely be used in future classes.

  6. I really liked this video. I thought it was a good method to illustrate the common misconceptions of ecological services and then provide the audience with a true definition of what they are. This helped to emphasize how unaware the general population is to these services. I also liked how you guys emphasized on the Biosphere 2. This helped to portray the importance of the ecological services provided by the environment, as it demonstrated that we were unable to replicate these services, and that we should not take them for granted.

  7. This video brought up some good points. I really liked the interviews at the beginning of the video. It was cool to hear what people thought about ecological services. Some really good thoughts were brought up that I don't normally think about. I thought the interview with the professor was a bit too long, but it was still neat to hear his thoughts, especially since I'm sure people don't think about urban foresty that much.

  8. I thought you all did a great job on this video and it was a very good idea to interview different people on what they thought ecological services were to kind of give us an idea on how much the human population actually knows. Interviewing a professor at Tech was also a good idea. Nice job! My only critique (and it's slight) is the audio - some parts were very soft while others were really loud. Otherwise...awesome job!

  9. I liked that your group started with the misconception of what ecosystems services are. This was a great way to introduce the topic and expand on how it’s something that affects us all. The interview with Dr. Wiseman was a credible source for defining the concept and putting it in a serious context. There may have been too much emphasis on his answers but I did enjoy the segment on Biosphere II that broke up the interview. Like other viewers, I had some issues with the volume levels but overall the content in the podcast was great.

  10. The video is done very well. They give relevant information and reach out to find opinions from direct services. The use of interviews keeps the video interesting. It does seem like they may have used people for too much of the video. There is little information given by the makers, most of it comes from Dr. Wiseman. I think that researched facts may have actually added to this video. Some of the video was also difficult to find a comfortable volume.

  11. This is a very informative video. I really liked how you used interviews to show not many people know about ecosystem services. Using a professional from Virginia Tech was also a great idea. This group says that ecosystem services are important and necessary. They say that many ecosystem services cannot be duplicated. This was proven when the biosphere 2 project failed. This is a very professional video that is easy to pay attention to.

  12. This group’s video presented several perspectives on ecosystem services, including a professional opinion, Dr. Wiseman. This was an innovative approach that I have not seen in any other group’s video. The volume changes made it difficult to understand some sections of narration. Overall, the group presented a good perspective of what ecosystem services are and are not.

  13. I think that Group 7 did a great job of taking the written part of their book section of Infinite Nature and putting it into a visual show. I think that their video was well thought out and it was neat to see what outsiders thought ecosystems were and then finish it with an expert’s opinion. Also, it was neat to see pictures of Biosphere II while they were talking about it because I feel like many individuals don’t know about Biosphere II. A point for improvement would be making the voice over louder; it was kind of hard to hear what the group was stating. Great Work!!

  14. Your video was very well done. The volume dramatically dropped when the video changed from an interview to a voice over, so next time, make sure the volume stays consistent so it's not difficult for viewers to hear. It was definitely interesting to see the difference between outsiders opinions and the expert opinion on what ecosystem services are. Also, seeing pictures of Biosphere II was fascinating. Great Work!

  15. The video begins by asking people what they believe are ecosystem services. This is useful in showing how little people know about ecosystem services and how they can easily go unnoticed despite their great value. Dr. Wiseman gives his take on ecosystems and explains the values provided by urban forestry. The example of Biosphere 2 shows just how important ecosystem services are, and we would not be able to survive without them. Although it was rather dull, this video could help open peoples’ eyes to the benefits of nature.

  16. Great video! You all did an excellent job elaborating on the points mentioned in the book. The interview provides a lot of support for your points as well. I think that a little more information on Biosphere II and the specific services that failed would add to your argument that ecosystem services are very valuable and difficult to replicate. All in all, nice video!

  17. This video was very good I like how they started it off asking people what an ecosystem service is. This is a good tactic because it shows how many people general don’t know what a ecosystem service is and it makes people unfamiliar with an ecosystem service not feel bad about not knowing and the video makes it easy to understand. I think interviewing an expert was a great idea his explanation made it easier to understand. There have been recent studies giving ecosystem services a dollar value to make people better understand how much free work the environment does for us. I also enjoyed the part about Biosphere 2 because it shows that technology can’t solve all of our problems.

  18. I thought the video was good, despite the minor volume problem. The director's commentary is informative and I thought it was well-written. I am wondering if the reasoning for taxing us for protecting, for example, the atmosphere, could go to far? I agree that polluters should be taxed and that the intent is good, but like a lot of laws, they get abused eventually.

  19. I thought it was very interesting how the group had the professor talk about the topic and I thought his input was a large benefit to the movie because it brought forth credible information. I liked how the beginning of the movie also had input from different students on what they thought about the topic about the many misconceptions that follow. One issue during the movie that I found was the different sound levels from those being interviewed and recorded. The professor was very loud, but then the times when it was the recording of a script, it was very difficult to understand. The overall layout of the video though was very unique and it reminded me of the informational videos I watched in high school.

  20. I thought you all did a good job on clearing up what an ecosystem service actually is. As apparent by your video, many people are not aware of what they are and what they do for our environment. I also think that interviewing a professor gives your video more credibility.

  21. This video was very informative about how ecosystem services are important. I'm sure its nearly impossible to figure out how much they are worth but your video was a good source of information for the thought of this topic. i think the concept of trying to put a price on the earth and its systems is a little odd and sort of unnecessary, but it is a thought provoking topic to bring up. Excellent work.

  22. Great job on the video. It was very informative and educational. I really like the interview about ecosystem services with the focus on urban forestry. I liked the intro when they asked people what they thought the meaning of ecosystems services was. It really shows that more people need to be educated about the subject.

  23. This video seemed to be put together very well. I like the use of outside sources such as students and professors, this was a great idea. The video seemed to flow rather well and increased my knowledge of the subject at hand.

  24. Nice video. I thought you guys did a good job addressing the misconceptions and the truth surrounding ecosystem services. The graphics were great but I think the sound could use a little tuning up. I liked how you had the Forestry professor as an additional credible source. I would have like to have seen a little more emphasis on the economics of the problem, perhaps what people would be willing to pay for different services?

  25. This was a fantastic video. I liked that you incorporated an interview with a professor from VT. That was certainly a nice touch. Urban Forestry was a good choice as an example of ecosystem services, because of the intrinsic inflated value of all trees in a city. Also, the sequence concerning Biosphere was interesting. It points out that even if we try not to take for granted the ecosystem services that are provided to us, we can still underestimate their relevance. I enjoyed the interviews with the makers of the video as well. That was a feature that other videos seemed to be lacking.

  26. I think you all did a nice job with your video. I like the interviews to show how an average person doesn’t really know what ecosystem services are. Then bringing in Dr. Wiseman was a nice touch for the “expert’s response” as you all put it. Great job bringing in the Biosphere 2 experiment to show how even our very expensive creation of another environment just for a couple people still failed. I thought the production of the video was good too. A little too quick in one of the transitions going back to Dr. Wiseman it seemed like it started in the middle of something else he was saying.
